Metallic HTV Compared: Siser Electric, Siser Metal, and Stahls' Soft Metallic

Metallic designs sell. Gold lettering on a graduation tee, silver numbers on a cheer shirt, rose gold names on bridal party tanks, chrome logos on a black hoodie. But not every "metallic" heat transfer vinyl looks or behaves the same. Some have a soft pearlescent sheen, some look like polished chrome, and some are designed for a smooth, low-temperature application on delicate fabrics. Here is how three of the most popular metallic HTVs at Atlanta Vinyl compare.

Siser EasyWeed Electric: Metallic Sheen with EasyWeed Handling

EasyWeed Electric takes the easy cutting and weeding of standard EasyWeed and adds a vibrant, pearlescent metallic sheen. It comes on a pressure-sensitive carrier that makes detailed designs and logos easy to weed, it is durable wash after wash, and it can be layered for multi-color designs.

  • Press at 305°F for 10–15 seconds with medium pressure.
  • Peel hot or cold.
  • CPSIA certified, so it works well for kids' clothing.
  • Available in a wide range of colors and finishes, including the all colors EasyWeed Electric bundle.

Best for: spirit wear, birthday shirts, layered multi-color designs and anyone who wants a metallic look without changing their usual EasyWeed workflow. See our EasyWeed Electric application instructions for step-by-step help.

Siser Metal: The Chrome Look

Siser Metal is the choice when you want true, show-stopping shine. It has a smooth finish and a soft hand and is designed to be washed and worn without becoming lackluster. Colors include gold, silver, rose gold, bronze, red, blue, purple and more.

  • Press at 305°F for 10–15 seconds with medium pressure.
  • Cold peel is required. Peeling early can dull the finish.
  • Comes in 20" widths, which is great for larger designs and production.
  • Try the all colors Siser Metal bundle to test every shade.

Best for: bridal parties, formal events, graduation and any design where the metallic effect is the star. Follow our Siser Metal application instructions carefully, especially the cold peel.

Stahls' Soft Metallic: Lower Heat, Smooth Finish

Stahls' CAD-CUT Soft Metallic is a professional-grade metallic film that applies at a lower 285°F for just 8–10 seconds with medium pressure and a cold peel. That shorter, cooler press is a plus on polyester and blends where you want to avoid scorching or press marks. It is rated for 100% cotton, 100% polyester and cotton/poly blends.

Best for: production shops, polyester garments and decorators who already use other Stahls' materials and want consistent settings.

Which Metallic HTV Should You Choose?

  • You want to layer metallic accents with other colors: EasyWeed Electric.
  • You want the brightest, most mirror-like shine: Siser Metal.
  • You press a lot of polyester or want a lower temperature: Stahls' Soft Metallic.
  • You want something that shifts colors in the light instead: look at holographic options in our holographic, pearl and aurora HTV guide.
  • You want sparkle instead of shine: compare glitter options in glitter HTV.

Tips for Pressing Metallic HTV

  1. Use a cover sheet. A PTFE sheet or parchment paper protects the shiny surface from direct heat. Learn more in what are press pillows and PTFE sheets.
  2. Respect the peel. Metal and Soft Metallic are cold peel. Wait until the carrier is completely cool.
  3. Do not over-press. Extra time or heat can change the finish. Stick to the recommended settings.
  4. Keep designs bold. Metallic films are often slightly thicker, so very thin lines and tiny text can be harder to weed. Run a test cut first.
  5. Put metallics on top. When layering, the metallic accent usually works best as the final layer so it is not covered or re-pressed multiple times.
  6. Wash gently. Wait 24 hours, turn the garment inside out and wash cold. Our aftercare guide has the details.

Metallic HTV vs. Gold Foil DTF

If you need a metallic effect on a full-color design or want to avoid weeding, gold foil DTF is another option. Our article comparing gold foil DTF transfers vs. metallic HTV breaks down the pros and cons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can metallic HTV go on polyester?

Yes. All three materials in this guide list polyester as a compatible fabric. Use the lowest effective temperature and a cover sheet to reduce shine and press marks.

Why did my metallic vinyl look dull after pressing?

The most common causes are peeling a cold peel film too early, pressing too long or too hot, or pressing without a cover sheet.

Is metallic HTV safe for kids' clothing?

EasyWeed Electric is CPSIA certified. For any other material, check the product page before using it on children's items.

Metallic HTV is one of the easiest ways to make a simple design look premium. Choose EasyWeed Electric for easy layering, Siser Metal for maximum shine, or Stahls' Soft Metallic for lower heat on synthetics. Browse all three in our heat transfer vinyl collection.
