Which Transfer Type Is Right For Your Job?

Three questions decide it: what fabric, how many colors, and how many pieces. Answer those in order and there is usually only one right answer.

Most transfer failures are choice problems, not application problems. The print peeled, cracked, faded or turned pink because the format was wrong for the fabric — not because the person pressing it did anything wrong.

The good news is that the decision is more mechanical than it looks. Three questions, answered in this order, will narrow six formats down to one or two nearly every time: what fabric are you pressing onto, how many colors are in the design, and how many pieces are you making? Fabric rules out the most options, so it goes first. Color count usually decides between digital and spot-color printing. Quantity decides the economics.

Start with the fabric

Fabric eliminates more options than anything else, which is why it goes first. Find yours below.

100% cotton

Retail tees, fleece hoodies, tote bags, aprons

Cotton is the most forgiving fabric there is. It tolerates high heat, holds ink well, and every format except sublimation performs on it. Choose based on your artwork rather than the fabric: photographic art goes to DTF, and a single-color design in volume gets the softest result from Vintage.

Avoid: Sublimation. The dye needs polyester to bond to and will wash out of cotton almost immediately.

Cotton / poly blends

Tri-blend tees, 50/50 tees, most soft retail blanks

Blends behave mostly like cotton, but the polyester content introduces a risk of dye migration on darker garments — the garment dye creeps into your print and discolors it over hours or days. Athletic is our most opaque formula and blocks it best. DTF's white underbase also resists it well.

Avoid: Assuming a blend behaves like cotton. Test one dark piece and check it 24 hours later, not 10 minutes later.

Polyester is where the most jobs go wrong, because of dye migration and because the fabric scorches at temperatures cotton shrugs off. Athletic screen print is built for exactly this. If the garment is white or very light polyester, sublimation gives you an edge-to-edge print with zero hand feel.

Avoid: Pressing too hot. Polyester scorches and shines. Follow the formula's stated temperature rather than defaulting to your cotton settings.

Stretch, spandex & Lycra

The failure mode here is not adhesion, it is cracking. The garment stretches and rebounds thousands of times and a rigid print breaks up along the stress lines. Performance is formulated to flex and recover with the fabric instead of fighting it.

Avoid: Rhinestones. Stones do not stretch, and on a garment that does they pop off along the flex points.

Heat-sensitive fabrics

Thin performance knits, some athleisure, delicate blends

Some garments simply cannot take a standard press temperature without scorching, shining or distorting. Silicone presses at only 280°F, which is low enough to be safe on fabrics that would be ruined at 325°F or above.

Avoid: Guessing. If the garment has no press instructions, sacrifice one piece and test before committing the run.

Nylon & coated fabrics

Windbreakers, jackets, bags, waterproof shells

Nylon and water-repellent coatings are genuinely difficult. The coating that keeps water out also keeps adhesive from bonding, and nylon has a low melting point. There is no format we can promise will work sight unseen on these.

Avoid: Running a full job without a test piece. This is the one fabric category where we would rather you order a small quantity first.

Step 2

Then count your colors

Count the distinct flat colors in your artwork — not shades, not gradients, individual solid colors.

One to three flat colors: spot-color screen print transfers are open to you, and at volume they are dramatically cheaper. Note that only our Athletic formula runs multi-color; Vintage, Performance, Puff and Silicone are single-color. DTF is still available and often the better call for small runs.

Four or more colors, gradients, soft shadows or a photograph: you need a digital process. DTF prints in unlimited color with no setup cost, so complexity is free — a 40-color design costs exactly the same as a 2-color one. Sublimation is the other full-color option, but only on light polyester.

One thing worth knowing: with spot color, every additional color adds cost and complexity. With digital printing it adds nothing. That inversion is why the color count question matters so much.

Step 3

Then check the math on quantity

Cost per print behaves very differently across formats, and the ranking flips as volume climbs.

Under 50 pieces: DTF almost always wins. There is no minimum and no setup, so you pay only for the film your designs occupy. Gang several designs onto one sheet and the cost per print drops further.

50 to 150 pieces: the crossover zone. Simple one-color artwork starts favoring screen print transfers here. Complex or multi-color artwork usually stays with DTF.

150 pieces and up: screen print transfers pull away decisively on simple designs — our lowest volume tier lands under a dollar per sheet, which digital printing cannot match. This is where shops doing team orders, uniforms and merch runs save real money.

Two things distort the math worth accounting for. First, gang sheet efficiency: a sheet with wasted space costs the same as a full one, so layout is money. Second, screen print minimums start at 8 sheets — if you only need 6 pieces, the comparison never gets to happen.

Always test one piece before running a full job on an unfamiliar garment. Fabric behaves differently by mill and finish, not just by fiber content on the label.

Five mistakes that cost people money

The failures we hear about most often, and what actually causes each one.

Sublimating onto cotton

The single most common failure. Sublimation dye bonds chemically to polyester fibers and has nothing to hold onto in cotton. It may look fine coming off the press and be gone after one wash. If the garment is not at least 65% polyester, pick something else.

Ignoring dye migration on dark polyester

You press a white design onto a red polyester jersey, it looks perfect, and two days later it is pink. The garment dye migrated into your ink. It usually shows up hours after pressing, not immediately — which is why people miss it during a test. Use a high-opacity formula built to block it.

Buying spot color for photographic art

Screen print transfers use solid pre-mixed inks and cannot reproduce gradients, soft shadows or photographs. If your file has more than a handful of flat colors, spot color is the wrong tool no matter how good the price looks.

Under-pressing

Far more prints fail from too little pressure and time than from too much. A transfer that peels after two washes was almost always under-applied, not defective. Verify your press actually reaches its displayed temperature — many run 20 to 30 degrees cool, and platen pressure drifts over time.

Uploading a low-resolution file

An image pulled from a website is typically 72 DPI and a few hundred pixels wide. Blown up to 11 inches across it prints soft and pixelated, and no printing process can add detail that is not in the file. Supply artwork at 300 DPI at the size you intend to press it.

Which transfer type lasts the longest?

Application matters far more than format. A correctly applied DTF, screen print or sublimation transfer will all outlast normal use of the garment — commonly 50 or more washes. The differences show up at the extremes: sublimation cannot peel because it is dyed into the fiber, screen print is the most abrasion-resistant, and rhinestones are the most vulnerable because individual stones can be knocked loose.

Which is cheapest per shirt?

It depends entirely on volume. At one to fifty pieces, DTF is almost always cheapest because there is no setup and you pay only for the film you use. Past roughly one hundred pieces of the same simple design, screen print transfers pull ahead sharply — our lowest tier is under a dollar a sheet. The crossover point moves with your color count and how efficiently you fill a gang sheet.

Which transfer has the softest hand feel?

Sublimation, by a wide margin — there is no ink layer at all, so you cannot feel the print. Among formats that sit on top of the fabric, Vintage screen print is the softest we make. DTF sits somewhere in the middle. Puff is deliberately the opposite: it is meant to be felt.

Can I mix transfer types on one garment?

Yes, and it is a common way to get a premium look — a screen print base with a small foil or rhinestone accent, for example. Press in order from the highest temperature to the lowest, and cover previously applied areas with a Teflon or parchment sheet so you do not re-melt them.

What if my design has both photographic art and bold text?

Use DTF. Trying to split a design across two processes means two presses, two registration steps and two chances to misalign. DTF handles the photographic portion and the flat text in a single pass.

How do I decide between DTF and screen print transfers specifically?
