Heat Transfer Vinyl 101: A Beginners Guide to Understanding HTV
Heat Transfer Vinyl, which you might hear referred to as Craft Vinyl, T-shirt Vinyl, Iron-on Vinyl, or simply HTV has been revolutionary in the world of customizable apparel and accessories, offering endless possibilities for t-shirt designers, DIY enthusiasts, and business owners. But what exactly is HTV, and how can it be used to turn your creative ideas into reality? In this guide, we'll explore the basics of HTV, what it is, how it’s used, the necessary equipment for working with it, some different types available, and different application methods to use for your designs.
What is Heat Transfer Vinyl?
At its core, Heat Transfer Vinyl is a specialty vinyl polymer that is designed to be cut, weeded, and applied to various fabrics and materials using heat to create custom designs. Iron-on Vinyl is composed of three main parts: the carrier sheet, the vinyl itself, and an adhesive backing.
Why Choose HTV?
HTV stands out for its versatility, durability, and ease of use. Whether you're a professional designer seeking unique finishes for your apparel line, a DIY enthusiast looking to personalize your wardrobe or other household objects, or a business owner aiming to produce branded merchandise, HTV offers a reliable and cost-effective solution.
Its ability to adhere to various materials, coupled with the vast range of finishes like glitter and holographic allows for lots of creative freedom.
Heat Transfer Vinyl has a relatively low cost for entry compared to other apparel decoration methods making it easy for anyone to get started and because of its durability and versatility it remains a viable method for professionals as well.
How Do You Use Heat Transfer Vinyl?
After the designing process for your project is complete, the process of using HTV is generally 3 steps. Scaling and cutting, weeding, and heat pressing. Depending on your vinyl supplier and the type of you are using these steps may change, we will address that later on. For now, let us talk about the 3 main steps and the equipment you’ll need to perform them properly.
Cutting
The first piece of equipment you will need when using Iron-on vinyl is a cutting machine.
This will allow you to precisely cut your design into the adhesive and vinyl portion of the HTV film leaving the carrier sheet in-tact.
Vinyl cutting machines range from small desktop models for hobbyists or smaller businesses to large format machines for commercial and professional use.
Smaller machines include options like the Cricut Maker, Cricut Explore, Siser Juliet, and Silhouette Cameo machines. If you’re using one of these machines or a similar model from a different brand, you may also need a cutting mat to properly load the HTV into it. At Atlanta Vinyl we offer a 12” x 12” Light Tack Cutting Mat compatible with these smaller machines.
You should be sure to check with your iron-on vinyl supplier to see their recommended cut settings.
Weeding
After the vinyl has been cut you need to weed away the excess material. There are several different types of weeding tools that can be used for this portion. We recommend Siser Weeder Tool for easy removal of excess vinyl. When removing the excess HTV off of the carrier sheet it is important to remember any small details including the center of letters like “O”, “A”, and “D”. If these portions aren’t removed as they should be when the design is heat applied to your garment it can be extremely difficult if not impossible to remove without damaging the rest of the design.
Heat Pressing
The last step in using T-shirt Vinyl or Heat Transfer Vinyl is to use heat to apply the vinyl to a garment. The three factors that need to be considered when using your HTV are the Time, Temperature, and Pressure.
There are a few different options available when it comes to heat pressing your vinyl. The first is an every-day household iron like you would use for getting wrinkles out of your clothes. Most Heat Transfer Film options are designed to be pressed around 275- 300°F and household irons can get up to that temperature making them an affordable and easy option.
Then there are smaller hand held heat presses expressly designed for applying HTV. This includes options available from Cricut like the Cricut Easy Press and Cricut Easy Press Mini. These types of heat presses will allow you to have precise control over the time and temperature that you’re using when pressing your HTV.
And finally you have actual Heat Presses. Whether it be a clamshell or a swing-away, an auto open or manual, digital or analogue. These heat presses are available in larger sizes allowing you to press larger designs at once instead of multiple pieces. These heat presses also have adjustable pressure settings so if you're using a Heat Transfer Film like Parart™ 3D Puff HTV that requires higher pressure to achieve the proper finish you can control that variable easily.
