Choose your width, length and color below — all 65 colors stocked in both 12" and 24", cut fresh from the roll and shipped from our Atlanta warehouse.
Authorized ORAFOL dealer. Genuine ORACAL film, never repackaged or relabeled. Rated 4.8★ by 1,200+ customers.
Why crafters and sign shops choose ORACAL 651
- It actually stays put. 4.1 lb/in peel adhesion (FINAT TM-1) means it grips glass, metal and painted surfaces and doesn't lift at the edges the way economy vinyl does.
- Six years outdoors. ORAFOL rates standard colors and transparent at up to 6 years of vertical outdoor exposure. Metallics are rated 4 years, and 086 Brilliant Blue 3 years.
- Cuts and weeds cleanly. At 2.5 mil it holds fine detail on a Cricut, Silhouette, Brother or professional plotter without tearing on small text.
- 65 colors, two widths, one page. Gloss across the range plus matte and metallic options — sheets for testing, 50-yard rolls for production.
- Genuine ORAFOL film. We buy direct. The counterfeit and relabeled 651 problem on marketplace sites is real; this isn't that.

What ORACAL 651 is used for
ORAFOL specifies 651 for flat, medium-term applications: car, truck, van and trailer graphics; interior and exterior signage; architectural and automotive window graphics; point of purchase displays; and craft and home décor.
In practice that means storefront window lettering, vehicle door decals and lettering, mailbox and address numbers, yard and real estate signs, tumblers and drinkware, laptop and water bottle decals, stencils for painting wood signs, boat lettering, and equipment labeling.
One important limit: 651 is rated for flat applications. It is a calendered film and will not conform to compound curves, deep recesses or corrugation — that's what cast film like ORACAL 751C is for.
ORACAL 651 vs 631 vs 751C — which one do you need?
The single most common question we get. All figures below are from ORAFOL's own Americas technical data sheets.
| ORACAL 631 | ORACAL 651 | ORACAL 751C | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Indoor walls, exhibitions, removable décor | Signage, flat vehicle graphics, crafts, drinkware | Long-term & complex vehicle graphics, marine |
| Film type | Calendered PVC | Calendered PVC | Cast PVC |
| Thickness | 3 mil | 2.5 mil | 2 mil |
| Adhesive | Water-based, removable | Solvent-based, permanent | Solvent-based, permanent |
| Peel adhesion | 1.6 lb/in | 4.1 lb/in | 4.1 lb/in |
| Outdoor durability | 3 years | Up to 6 years | Up to 8 years |
| Min. application temp | 50°F | 46°F | 46°F |
| Service temp | -40°F to +176°F | -40°F to +176°F | -58°F to +230°F |
| Finish | Matte only | Gloss + select matte | Gloss |
Short version: if it needs to come off a wall cleanly, use 631. If it needs to survive weather on a flat surface, use 651. If it's wrapping a curved vehicle panel or needs to last a decade, use 751C.
ORACAL 651 is not heat transfer vinyl
This trips up a lot of first-time buyers. ORACAL 651 is pressure-sensitive adhesive vinyl — it has a sticky back and a paper liner, and it's applied at room temperature with transfer tape. It is not HTV, not iron-on, and is not applied with a heat press.
651 will not work on t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags or any fabric. ORAFOL does not list textiles as an application. If you're decorating garments, you want heat transfer vinyl instead.
Choosing your size
| Size | Best for | Roughly yields |
|---|---|---|
| 12" x 12" sheet | Testing a color, single small decals | 1 sq ft |
| 12" x 5 feet | Hobby projects, a handful of decals | 5 sq ft — about 20 tumbler decals |
| 12" x 5 yards | Regular crafters, small batches | 15 sq ft |
| 12" x 10 yards | Etsy shops, steady production | 30 sq ft |
| 24" x 5 to 25 yards | Sign shops, wider designs, plotters | 30–150 sq ft |
| 50 yard rolls | Best value per square foot — production work | 150 sq ft (12") / 300 sq ft (24") |
The 24" width is the standard commercial roll size and fits most professional cutters and plotters. If your design is wider than 11.5" finished, go 24".
Cut settings for ORACAL 651
Starting points only — blade wear, mat tack and machine age all shift these. Always run a test cut first.
| Machine | Blade | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| Cricut Maker / Explore | Fine point (45°) | "Premium Vinyl – Permanent Glossy" preset |
| Silhouette Cameo | Ratchet / AutoBlade | Blade 2–3, Speed 5, Force 5–8 |
| Brother ScanNCut | Standard | Cut pressure 0, blade 3–4 |
| Roland / Graphtec | 45° | Force 60–90g, speed 20–30 cm/s, offset 0.25 |
You want a kiss cut — through the vinyl, scoring the liner but not cutting through it. If the liner separates, back the force off.
How to apply ORACAL 651
- Cut your design mirrored only if you're using it as a stencil; for standard decals, cut it reading correctly.
- Weed the excess vinyl at room temperature. Cold vinyl is brittle and small counters tear.
- Apply transfer tape over the weeded design and burnish firmly with a squeegee. Medium-tack paper transfer tape is the right pairing for 651 — high-tack clear tape can grab harder than the vinyl grabs your surface and lift the design back off.
- Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol. Not household glass cleaner — the surfactants in it leave a film that kills adhesion.
- Apply above 46°F, hinge-taping the center for large pieces. Squeegee from the center outward.
- Remove the transfer tape slowly, pulling back on itself at a sharp angle rather than straight up.
- Let it cure. Adhesive reaches full bond over 24–72 hours. Keep it away from water, washing and weather during that window.
What it sticks to
ORAFOL's data sheet specifies test surfaces rather than a consumer substrate list, so the following is our own guidance from what our customers report — not a manufacturer specification.
Works well: glass, powder-coated and stainless steel, painted metal, acrylic and plexiglass, sealed and painted wood, smooth plastics, laminated surfaces, ceramic, hard smooth tumblers.
Avoid: any fabric or textile, unsealed or raw wood, brick and stucco, low-surface-energy plastics like polypropylene and polyethylene, anything flexible or repeatedly bent, walls you plan to strip later (use 631), and compound curves.
Care and longevity
Once fully cured, ORACAL 651 is waterproof and stands up to rain, sun and normal handling within its rated service temperature of -40°F to +176°F.
On drinkware and dishwashers: ORAFOL does not list drinkware as an application and publishes no dishwasher guidance for 651, so nobody — including us — can honestly call it dishwasher safe. Hand wash decorated tumblers and mugs. Dishwasher heat and detergent will shorten the life of any adhesive vinyl.
Storage: store rolls upright or hanging, never lying on their side under weight. Keep them out of direct sun at room temperature. Shelf life is 2 years in original packaging.
Troubleshooting
- Edges lifting after a few days — surface wasn't clean, or it was applied below 46°F. Alcohol-wipe and reapply warm.
- Vinyl won't leave the transfer tape — tape is too high-tack. Switch to medium-tack paper tape, and burnish the decal onto the surface harder before peeling.
- Small text tearing while weeding — blade is dull or the vinyl is cold. Fresh blade, room temperature, and weed slowly at a shallow angle.
- Bubbles under a large decal — hinge-tape the center and squeegee outward in overlapping strokes. Pinprick stubborn bubbles with a fine needle and press flat.
- Layered colors shifting — burnish each layer fully and let layered pieces sit before applying the next.

ORACAL 651 frequently asked questions
Is ORACAL 651 permanent?
Yes. It uses a clear, solvent-based permanent adhesive rated at 4.1 lb/in peel adhesion. It is designed to stay put and will typically need heat, solvent or scraping to remove — and may lift paint or finish on removal. If you need it to come off cleanly later, use ORACAL 631 instead.
How long does ORACAL 651 last outdoors?
ORAFOL rates standard colors and transparent at up to 6 years of vertical outdoor exposure in Climate Zone 1. Metallic colors are rated 4 years and 086 Brilliant Blue 3 years. Indoors, out of UV, it lasts considerably longer.
Is ORACAL 651 heat transfer vinyl? Can I put it on a t-shirt?
No, and no. ORACAL 651 is adhesive vinyl with a sticky back and a paper liner, applied cold with transfer tape. It is not HTV, is not applied with a heat press, and will not survive on fabric. For garments you need heat transfer vinyl.
Is ORACAL 651 dishwasher safe?
ORAFOL publishes no dishwasher rating for 651 and does not list drinkware among its specified applications, so we won't claim it is. Hand wash decorated tumblers and mugs. Repeated dishwasher cycles will shorten the life of any adhesive vinyl.
How thick is ORACAL 651?
2.5 mil (70 micron in ORAFOL's EU specification), measured without liner and adhesive.
What is the difference between ORACAL 651 and 631?
631 uses a water-based removable adhesive (1.6 lb/in) and is matte-only, rated 3 years outdoors — built for indoor walls and temporary décor. 651 uses a solvent-based permanent adhesive (4.1 lb/in), comes in gloss plus select mattes, and is rated up to 6 years outdoors.
Do I need transfer tape for ORACAL 651?
For anything with multiple pieces, letters or fine detail, yes. Use medium-tack paper transfer tape — high-tack clear tape can hold the vinyl harder than your surface does and pull the design back off.
Is ORACAL 651 waterproof?
Yes, once fully cured. Allow 24–72 hours after application before exposing a decal to water, washing or weather.
Can I use ORACAL 651 on my car?
Yes, for flat surfaces — door lettering, window decals, trailer graphics, tailgate decals. ORAFOL specifies 651 for flat applications only. It will not conform to compound curves or body creases; use cast film such as ORACAL 751C for those.
Will ORACAL 651 stick to wood?
To sealed or painted wood, yes. To raw or unsealed wood, no — the grain and porosity stop the adhesive from making contact. Many crafters use 651 as a paint stencil on raw wood instead, then remove it.
What temperature does ORACAL 651 need to be applied at?
ORAFOL specifies a minimum application temperature of +46°F. Once applied and cured it holds from -40°F to +176°F.
How many colors does ORACAL 651 come in?
We stock 65 colors in both 12" and 24" widths, including gloss across the range plus matte white, matte black, matte red and metallic silver, gold and copper.
How long does ORACAL 651 last on the roll?
Shelf life is 2 years in the original packaging at 68°F and 50% relative humidity. Store rolls upright or hanging, out of direct sunlight.
Is this genuine ORACAL vinyl?
Yes. Atlanta Vinyl is an authorized ORAFOL dealer and we buy direct. Every roll is genuine ORACAL film in ORAFOL packaging — never repackaged, relabeled or re-slit from unknown stock.
